Campbells Bay sits in the East Coast Bays, between Mairangi Bay and Castor Bay, the southernmost of three scenic beaches between Red Bluff and Tatarata Point. European settlement here dates back to 1852, though the bay changed hands several times before being purchased and named after Duncan Campbell in 1895. Most of the housing stock was built between 1970 and 1979, though the earliest recorded homes date from the 1920s.
As of June 2025, Campbells Bay had a population of around 2,960. The reserve behind the golden sand beach is bordered by a stream, and the Campbells Bay Tennis Club, incorporated into the park in 1948, is regarded as one of the most picturesque on the North Shore. Campbells Bay sits among a run of beaches along this stretch of the East Coast Bays, each one distinct despite being only a short walk apart, with Campbells Bay itself known for being one of the quieter of the group, and for the bush clad slopes that run down to the sand rather than the open, exposed cliffs found further along the coast.
