Takapuna's Twin Waters
Takapuna sits on an isthmus between Shoal Bay and the Hauraki Gulf, with Lake Pupuke, one of the oldest features of the Auckland volcanic field, sitting right in the middle of the suburb. Tamaki Maori settled here from the 13th or 14th century, drawing on the resources of the lake and a pohutukawa grove called Te Uru Tapu, still standing today and once used for funeral ceremonies.
By the early 1900s Takapuna had become a popular seaside escape, with ferry services, weekend baches, and horse drawn carriages along the esplanade. Lake Pupuke itself is the crater of a volcanic eruption around 150,000 years ago, later filled with fresh spring water, and its historic pump house now operates as the heritage listed PumpHouse Theatre. Takapuna Beach runs about a kilometre along the gulf, and at low tide it's possible to walk around Fossil Point to see fossilised lava flows from the same eruption that formed the lake.
As of June 2025, Takapuna had a population of around 11,930, making it one of the larger and busier suburbs on the North Shore, with a town centre, beach, and lake all within easy walking distance of each other.
