Stanley Point's Quiet Peninsula
Stanley Point sits on a small headland beside the Devonport Naval Base, and was known as Stanley Bay until the New Zealand Geographic Board officially renamed it in December 2007. It takes its name from Owen Stanley, captain of HMS Britomart, who surveyed the Waitemata Harbour in 1841. Crown land here was subdivided into suburban farms from 1850 and went on sale in 1853, with the area developing into a fashionable Devonport suburb in the early 1900s.
As of June 2025, Stanley Point had a population of around 1,970, one of the smallest suburbs on the North Shore. The Stanley Bay foreshore on the peninsula's western side gives sheltered inner harbour swimming and views back to the city, and residents are within walking distance of Devonport village and its 12 minute ferry service to Britomart. Philson House, a heritage-listed former residence on Stanley Point Road, is one of the more notable historic buildings on the peninsula, reflecting the substantial homes built here as the suburb developed a reputation as a genteel Devonport address in the early 1900s, a character that carries through to the waterfront properties found on the peninsula today.
