Mount Albert's Volcanic Beginnings

Owairaka, the volcanic cone at the heart of Mount Albert, erupted more than 30,000 years ago and was one of the largest craters in the Auckland volcanic field, with lava flows reaching as far as Grey Lynn and Point Chevalier. Maori occupation of the maunga is believed to date from the 14th century, becoming increasingly fortified from the 17th century as one of the region's significant pa sites.

European settlers named the mountain and surrounding area Mount Albert shortly after 1840, and a sale of over 4,800 hectares to the government in 1841 included the mountain, paid for with 200 pounds alongside horses, blankets, and cloaks. A quarry on the maunga supplied stone for Auckland's growth well into the 20th century, continuing until 1928 despite resident protests, even though the summit itself had been set aside as public land in 1905.

The opening of Mount Albert railway station in 1880 spurred suburban development, doubling the local population within a decade, and by 1911 the area was large enough to become its own independent borough before later being absorbed into the wider city of Auckland. That railway era growth is still visible in the suburb's mix of villas and bungalows, many built on the good sized sections that were common when the area was first subdivided.
