Hillsborough's Harbour Views
The Hillsborough area was traditionally known as Rangiaowhia, a Maori settlement and waka landing site near the Manukau Harbour, within the rohe of Ngati Whatua Orakei. Much of that original site now sits beneath State Highway 20, built through the area in 1975. Suburban development began around the harbour in the 1930s and 40s with small baches, before most of the current housing stock, a mix of weatherboard and brick and tile bungalows, went up through the 1950s and 60s.
Hillsborough Cemetery, established in 1916, sits on a ridge at the southern edge of the isthmus overlooking the Manukau Harbour. Many streets in the suburb take advantage of the same elevation, with views stretching out toward the Manukau Heads and Puketutu Island, and coastal walking tracks running through pockets of native bush along the harbour edge. A number of churches border the suburb too, a leftover from the community that grew up around the harbour through the middle of the 20th century, when much of the suburb's current housing stock was first built.
