Remuera's Garden Suburb Character
Remuera has been known as Auckland's garden suburb since the 1890s, characterised by Edwardian and inter-war villas on large sections with mature, established trees. The first shops opened in 1890 at the corner of Victoria Avenue, and electric trams served the area from 1904 until buses took over in 1956.
Mount Hobson, known in Maori as Ohinerau, is the suburb's volcanic landmark, a 143 metre cone formed around 25,000 years ago with a horseshoe-shaped crater. It was used by Maori as a pa, and later as a quarry and pasture, before a water reservoir was installed. Terraces and pits from earlier occupation are still visible on the slopes, and the summit gives views over the Waitemata Harbour and Rangitoto.
As of June 2025, Remuera had a population of around 27,810, making it one of the largest and most established suburbs on the isthmus, with a mix of grand original villas and more recently built homes spread across its many streets and cul-de-sacs. Its size means the character of a property, and often its pool, can vary a great deal from one street to the next, even within a few blocks of Victoria Avenue's shops and cafes.

Looking After Remuera Pools
Remuera's mature trees are one of its best features and one of the main pool challenges. Leaf drop, especially in autumn, puts a lot of load on skimmers and filters.
Every visit, regardless of plan, starts with a full water test (pH, chlorine, alkalinity) checked against target range, plus a visual equipment check.
