St Marys Bay's Steep Heritage Streets
St Marys Bay traces back to 1850, when Bishop Jean Baptiste Francois Pompallier, New Zealand's first Catholic bishop, bought land here on behalf of the Catholic Church and named the area Mount St Mary. Prosperous families began settling from the 1850s, drawn by the harbour views, and built the elegant villas with extensive gardens that still line streets like London Street today.
Before European settlement, Maori had names for both ends of the bay: Te Papaku a Whai near Harbour Street to the east, and Ko Takere Haea, meaning the split canoe hull, near St Mary's Road and London Street to the west, now a listed heritage site. Each December, Mercy Hospice's grounds on College Hill are decorated with thousands of cascading lights as part of its Lights to Remember campaign, with visitors invited to dedicate a light to a loved one.
As of June 2025, St Marys Bay had a population of around 2,040, making it one of the smallest suburbs on the isthmus, its steep streets still lined with many of the original heritage villas overlooking the harbour below. That heritage character is part of what makes the suburb so tightly held, with properties rarely changing hands.
