Devonport's Naval and Volcanic History
Devonport is one of Auckland's earliest settled areas, with its three volcanic cones believed to have been occupied by Maori from around 1350 AD. It was originally called Flagstaff after a signalling station was set up on Mount Victoria in 1841, and was renamed Devonport in 1868. The Devonport Steam Ferry Company, established in 1881, connected the settlement to central Auckland and turned it into a proper suburb.
The suburb sits across three volcanoes: Takarunga/Mount Victoria, Maungauika/North Head, and Takararo/Mount Cambria. Streets are lined with wooden colonial villas from the late 1800s and early 1900s, and the Devonport Naval Base, the Royal New Zealand Navy's main facility, has been a fixture of the area for decades. North Head itself is honeycombed with World War II tunnels and gun emplacements built into the volcanic cone.
As of June 2025, Devonport had a population of around 5,090, drawn to the suburb's heritage character and the 12 minute ferry ride straight into downtown Auckland. Windsor Reserve, right by the ferry terminal, is home to the Devonport Library, a 1924 war memorial, and a footpath along Cheltenham Beach leading up to North Head. The Devonport Museum, open since 1977, and the Torpedo Bay Navy Museum a short walk along the seafront, both cover different sides of the suburb's history.
