Point Chevalier's Peninsula Story
Point Chevalier, known locally as Point Chev and originally named Point Bunbury, sits on a triangular peninsula reaching about 1,800 metres into the Waitemata Harbour. Its English name comes from Captain George Chevalier, a musketry instructor stationed at a military camp here during the New Zealand Wars of the 1860s. Before European settlement, Maori had settlements in the area including one at Meola Reef and a fishing camp at Rangi-mata-rau, later Point Chevalier Beach.
Trams arrived down Point Chevalier Road in the early 20th century, bringing day-trippers from Grey Lynn and, later, buses from Mount Albert and the west. The suburb had a lively run through the 1920s as a hub for jazz and dancing, and was also one of Auckland's earliest state housing areas. Point Chevalier Beach remains one of the more popular central Auckland beaches for swimming and watersports, and the suburb's California bungalows are a distinctive part of its streetscape today.
As of June 2025, Point Chevalier had a population of around 8,910, spread out along the length of the peninsula from the busy shops near Great North Road down to the quieter streets close to the water and the beach.
