Opulent Pools is based right here in Howick, so a callout to your pool rarely means a long drive across town. Howick is one of Auckland's oldest suburbs, founded in 1847 as a Royal New Zealand Fencible settlement, and that history is still visible today around Stockade Hill and the village centre.
Howick's History and Coastline
Howick was settled in 1847 by the Royal New Zealand Fencibles, retired soldiers given a cottage and an acre of land in exchange for defending the young Auckland settlement. It was the largest of the Fencible settlements, with more than 800 people across three companies by 1848. All Saints Anglican Church on Selwyn Road, built that same year, is the oldest building in East Auckland, and Shamrock Cottage from 1847 is the second oldest. Stockade Hill, originally a defensive stockade, is now a war memorial with a lookout over the village centre.
Bell House, another link to the area's early settlement, originally stood near Pakuranga Creek before being moved to its current site on Bell Road in 1895. The village centre around Picton Street still runs a Saturday morning market for fresh food and local produce, alongside the shops and cafes that make up the town centre.
Howick Beach sits at the bottom of the village, flanked by eroding cliffs of Waitemata sandstone at each end, with Mellons Bay to the west and Cockle Bay to the east. On a clear day the views stretch out across the Tamaki Strait toward Waiheke Island. Cascades Park, near the Historical Village, is the other well-used piece of green space in the area.
