Milford's Beach and Marina
Milford sits on the northern side of Lake Pupuke, with a beach running about two kilometres from Black Rock in the south to Castor Bay in the north. Wairau Creek reaches the sea at the northern end of the beach, where its lower tidal reaches host the Milford Marina, an 89 berth facility built in 1968. The suburb's name is linked to early resident Edwin Harrow, who settled in the area in 1881, with the earliest references to Milford as a suburb dating from around 1912.
In the early 20th century Milford was mainly a holiday destination lined with baches, before transitioning into a sought after residential suburb through the 1950s and 60s. Ye Olde Pirate Shippe, built by James Fletcher in 1928 and opened the following year, remains one of the area's more distinctive landmarks, along with the steel sculpture Beacon by artist Lang Ea near the Wairau Creek marina.
As of June 2025, Milford had a population of around 5,140, spread across the mix of beachfront apartments, marina-side properties, and family homes further back from the water that make up the suburb today.
