Parnell, Auckland's Oldest Suburb
Parnell was established in the early 1840s, before Auckland itself was officially founded, and was originally named after Sir John Parnell. The suburb sits on a ridge above the Waitemata Harbour, right next to Auckland Domain, the city's oldest park at 75 hectares. Parnell Road still runs through largely intact Victorian commercial architecture, a streetscape with no direct equivalent in Auckland's newer suburbs, and Hulme Court on Parnell Road is believed to be the oldest house still standing on its original Auckland site.
The Parnell Rose Gardens on Gladstone Road, officially Dove-Myer Robinson Park, hold more than 5,000 rose plants across 300 varieties, named after the Auckland mayor who held office for 18 years. Between the Domain, the rose gardens, and the historic streetscape, Parnell has one of the most consistently heritage-rich characters of any inner Auckland suburb.
As of June 2025, Parnell had a population of around 8,390, a mix of long-time residents in heritage homes and a steady flow of visitors drawn to its cafes, galleries, and boutique shopping along Parnell Road.
