Kohimarama's Beachside Slopes

Kohimarama Beach stretches 900 metres, the longest in the area, sitting between Mission Bay and St Heliers. Kohimarama Wharf was built in 1912, and the tricky walk out to it around the rocks eventually led to the construction of the road that became part of Tamaki Drive. From 1892 to 1919 the area was known as Jockey Bay, used as a training ground for race horses, before Bishop George Selwyn's Anglican Church acquired the land in the 1840s to support St Johns College and the Melanesian Mission.

The suburb's development included around 550 houses and a small group of shops known as the Melanesia shops, along with the 30 acre Madills Farm Recreation Reserve. Tamaki Drive itself was completed in 1932, incorporating the old Kohimarama Road, The Strand, and Bice Esplanade into the long harbourside route that's now popular with walkers, runners, and cyclists.

As of June 2025, Kohimarama had a population of around 4,450, sitting between two of the eastern bays' more popular beach suburbs, Mission Bay and St Heliers. Its own long stretch of beach and terraced hillside streets give it a character distinct from either neighbour, with plenty of homes taking advantage of the elevation for uninterrupted water views.

Many Kohimarama homes sit on the slopes above the beach, with pools set into terraced sections. Hillside pools collect runoff and debris after heavy rain, which can throw water balance off quickly.

Every visit, regardless of plan, starts with a full water test (pH, chlorine, alkalinity) checked against target range, plus a visual equipment check.

If a pool has gone green or badly out of balance, it's treated as a priority ahead of routine visits. Most pools are fully recovered within 3 to 6 days.
