Herne Bay's Harbourside History
Herne Bay has been a prosperous area since the 1850s, prized for its views over the Waitemata Harbour. It's named after Herne Bay, a seaside resort in Kent, England, and developed early on as a commuter suburb for Auckland's professional classes. Many of the large homes built here in that era were known as marine villas, often with their own jetties and boathouses down to the water.
Coxs Bay, known to Maori as Opoututeka, sits between Herne Bay and Westmere, and was once used for growing and processing flax on the surrounding hills. The Baptist Church on Jervois Road, built in a classic wooden style, is thought to house one of the oldest organs in Australia and New Zealand. Coxs Bay Reserve remains a popular spot for walking and taking in the harbour views the suburb has always been known for.
As of June 2025, Herne Bay had a population of around 2,830, making it one of the smaller and more tightly held suburbs on the harbour, in keeping with its long-standing reputation as one of Auckland's most exclusive waterfront addresses. Many of the original marine villas remain, now sitting alongside newer architecturally designed homes on the same steep, established sections.

Many Herne Bay homes are character villas on established sections, with pools fitted into terraced gardens near the harbour. Access down side paths and steps is often tight, so gear needs to come in by hand.
Every visit, regardless of plan, starts with a full water test (pH, chlorine, alkalinity) checked against target range, plus a visual equipment check.
