Belmont on the Ridge
Belmont sits on an isthmus on the Devonport Peninsula, between Shoal Bay and the Rangitoto Channel, bordered by Hauraki to the north, Bayswater to the southwest, and Narrow Neck to the southeast. The first references to the suburb date from the mid-1880s, though most of its housing stock was built between 1950 and 1959, giving it a strong mid-century character across its streets.
As of June 2025, Belmont had a population of around 3,220. Takapuna Grammar School, established in 1927, sits within the suburb, and nearby Takapuna Pa, close to Lake Pupuke, was once home to Ngati Whatua Orakei and looks out over Rangitoto Island. Being wedged between Takapuna and Devonport rather than facing the coast directly, Belmont has a quieter, more residential feel than either of its beachfront neighbours, with most of its streets set back from the water on the ridge itself. That mid-century building period means a lot of the original pools installed at the time are still in use today, alongside newer ones added as properties have been renovated over the decades, which means the age and condition of a pool's equipment can vary a fair bit even between neighbouring properties.
