Mission Bay's Waterfront Story
Mission Bay takes its name from the Melanesian Mission, established by Anglican Bishop George Selwyn at the bay in the late 1840s. The area stayed relatively remote from central Auckland until the early 20th century, when the Walsh Brothers Flying School began operating seaplanes from the bay in 1915, training more than a thousand pilots before it closed in 1924. The suburb itself was subdivided around 1919, creating Selwyn Reserve along the waterfront.
Tamaki Drive, completed in 1928, finally connected Mission Bay to downtown Auckland and the other eastern bays. Selwyn Reserve's best known feature is the Trevor Moss Davis Memorial Fountain, carved from Sicilian marble with three bronze sea monsters spouting water up to 12 metres high, though the fountain many people picture today wasn't installed until 1950. Bastion Point, at the northern end of the bay, holds deep significance in New Zealand history as the site of the 1970s land occupation protests.
As of June 2025, Mission Bay had a population of around 4,540, a mix of apartments and villas drawn together by the beach and the cafes and restaurants that line the waterfront. Its popularity as a destination for visitors doesn't let up much through the warmer months.

Our Work in Mission Bay
We've done a few jobs near the beach in Mission Bay. The most notable was a new plaster pool that hadn't been brushed while the plaster cured, so the dust had set onto the surface. We brought the pH right down, brushed and vacuumed it, then brought the pH back up and balanced the water.
