St Heliers on the Gulf
The headland at St Heliers is known to Maori as Te Pane o Horoiwi, settled by Horoiwi, who arrived on the Tainui waka in the 1200s. European settlement began with the Glen Orchard house in the 1850s, which by 1879 had become Auckland's first stud farm, run by Major Walmsley, who named the bay after Saint Helier in Jersey. A pier built in the 1890s made the bay popular for day trips, but it was the opening of Tamaki Drive in 1932 that turned St Heliers into the seaside suburb it is today.
Achilles Point, at the eastern edge of the suburb, commemorates the 1939 Battle of the River Plate, fought by the New Zealand-crewed HMS Achilles. Vellenoweth Green, a flat reserve fringed by Moreton Bay fig trees planted in 1923, sits across the road from the water, alongside a marble drinking fountain marking the district's first piped water supply.
As of June 2025, St Heliers had a population of around 11,760, one of the larger eastern bays suburbs, with its village shopping strip and beachfront a popular spot for locals from across the wider area. Properties range from clifftop homes with gulf views to quieter streets further back from the water.
