Eastern Beach's Coastal Position
Eastern Beach sits on the eastern side of the Bucklands Beach peninsula, with the Tamaki River to the west and the Tamaki Strait of the Hauraki Gulf to the east. Much of the peninsula, including Eastern Beach, is built on Waitemata sandstone, the same soft rock that forms the cliffs at nearby Howick Beach.
The suburb grew alongside neighbouring Bucklands Beach, which developed from Alfred Buckland's farmland into a holiday destination in the 1910s and then a full suburb through the 1950s. Bucklands Beach Reserve and Wharf Road Reserve are among the coastal reserves connecting the peninsula's beaches, and the exposed, open coastline along Eastern Beach itself is one of the more popular stretches for walking and swimming in the area.
The Murvale Path, accessed from Bleakhouse Road, winds through native and exotic trees in Murvale Reserve with views out over the Waitemata Harbour and Hauraki Gulf. At low tide, a walk around the southern point of Eastern Beach leads along the cliffs below Macleans Park, part of the wider Eastern Beach Loop that continues on toward Howick Beach further along the coast.
