Epsom Among the Volcanoes
Epsom was established as a village in 1841, on land that had been the centre of the Waiohua tribal confederation, with major settlements at Maungawhau (Mount Eden) and Maungakiekie (One Tree Hill). From the 1840s to the 1890s it was known for rich pasture supporting dairy herds and grain crops, before a tramway in 1903 and suburban development through the 1920s turned most of it into housing.
The suburb sits in a valley enclosed by four volcanoes: Maungawhau/Mount Eden, Mount Saint John, Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill, and Three Kings. Cornwall Park, 230 acres donated to the city in 1901 by Sir John Logan Campbell, borders Epsom and includes One Tree Hill itself, a 182 metre volcanic peak that once held the largest pa in the area and is marked today by an obelisk visible across the city.
As of June 2025, Epsom had a population of around 20,530, one of the larger suburbs on the isthmus, home to a mix of family villas, apartments, and the Greenlane Clinical Centre and Alexandra Park precincts that sit within its boundaries. Many of its larger family sections were subdivided from farmland once the tramway made commuting into the city practical, and quite a few still have the flat, generous footprint to show for it.
