Botany's Growth Story
Botany was farmland for most of the 19th and 20th centuries, part of the wider East Tamaki area, before becoming a distinct suburb during East Auckland's major growth period from the late 1980s through to the early 2000s. Neighbourhoods grew up around Botany Road, Ti Rakau Drive, and Chapel Road, and the area falls within the rohe of Ngai Tai ki Tamaki, whose ties to the wider region trace back to the Tainui waka around 1300.
Botany Town Centre opened in May 2001 at the corner of Ti Rakau Drive and Chapel Road, and has grown into one of East Auckland's main shopping and entertainment hubs, with more than 200 stores spread across three complexes, including a cinema. Guy's Homestead, a late 19th century homestead recognised by Heritage New Zealand, is one of the few reminders of the area's farming past, and Lloyd Elsmore Park and the Howick Historical Village are a short drive away.
Most of Botany's streets took shape in a single, concentrated building boom rather than growing gradually over decades, which is part of why the suburb has such a consistent, modern feel compared to older East Auckland suburbs like Pakuranga or Howick.
