Orakei's Hillside Views
Orakei sits on a peninsula five kilometres east of the city centre, with the Waitemata Harbour to the north and Hobson Bay and the Orakei Basin to the west and south. The land has been home to Ngati Whatua since the 1840s, and Takaparawhau, also known as Bastion Point, remains a site of major significance to the iwi and to the wider history of Auckland.
The suburb became sought after real estate after Tamaki Drive crossed Hobson Bay in 1929, with the city council planning a garden suburb rising from Okahu Bay up to Paritai Drive. Today Orakei retains a village-style feel, tucked between the harbour, Hobson Bay, and neighbouring Mission Bay, with the paddocks along Kepa Road still occasionally used for horse riding.
As of June 2025, Orakei had a population of around 5,760, a mix of the original state housing built from 1938 onward and the substantial homes that later went up along Paritai Drive and the surrounding hillside streets. That range in property age and style is reflected in the pools found across the suburb too, from simple original builds to newer designs built specifically to make the most of the harbour views, particularly on the streets rising up toward Paritai Drive.
