Westmere's Harbour Edge
Westmere took shape from a subdivision in the 1920s, with wide streets and gentle slopes giving many properties sea views. Westmere Primary School marked its centenary in 2014, reflecting how long the suburb has been an established residential area rather than a recent addition to the isthmus.
Coyle Park, once a landfill site, has since been rehabilitated into parkland and a nature reserve on the edge of Coxs Bay. Nearby, Meola Reef, a black basalt outcrop from an ancient lava flow off Three Kings volcano, stretches out into the Waitemata Harbour and is clearly visible from the Harbour Bridge at low tide. Motions Creek runs along the suburb's edge on its way to the harbour, with a public reserve along its eastern bank dating back to the original 1926 subdivision plans.
As of June 2025, Westmere had a population of around 2,340, making it one of the smaller suburbs on the isthmus, with a character shaped as much by its parks and coastal edge as by its housing. The suburb borders Herne Bay to the east and Point Chevalier to the west, giving it a quieter, more residential feel than either of its more commercial neighbours, with most streets leading down toward the water.
